Bulgaria attracts holidaymakers on a tight budget: the basic flight-and-hotel-package, equipment hire, school and lift pass are all very cheap. Drawbacks include limited slopes, old lifts, and mountain food that has you reaching for the Mars bars. But there are compensations other than simply low prices: all of our reporters have been struck by the friendliness of the local people, the ski schools are excellent, the tour op-organised nightlife is good fun, and from Borovets an excursion to Sofia is recommended.
