The number of keen skiers and boarders from New Zealand found kicking around the Alps gives a clue that there must be some decent slopes back home and indeed there are. The resorts are rather different from those of the Alps or the Rockies, and the networks of lifts and runs are rather limited by those exalted standards. However desperate you are for snow during the northern summer, we wouldn’t advise travelling half-way round the world from Europe or the US just to get access to the likes of Coronet Peak, Mount Hutt or Whakapapa. But resorts like these could make an interesting part of a wider-ranging visit to New Zealand, and may be the best option you have if you’re starting from somewhere nearer. From Australia, there are now direct flights into Queenstown, so you can be skiing within half a day of leaving Sydney.
