Austria Ski Resort
Austria used to be the favourite destination of British skiers. But that has changed over the last few years France has raced ahead of it and more recently Italy has reasserted itself on the international market to push Austria back into third place. Austria suffered for various reasons: exchange rates meant that it no longer appealed to the cost-conscious, especially compared with Italy; the resorts were slow to put in artificial snowmaking, even though most of them suffered poor cover on their low-altitude slopes; and as British skiing standards improved, people started looking for more challenging places to visit.

The dominant feature of Austria for the ski driver is the thoroughfare of the Inn valley, which runs through the Tirol from Landeck via Innsbruck to Kufstein. The motorway along it extends, with one or two breaks, westwards to the Arlberg pass and on to Switzerland. This artery is relatively reliable except in exceptionally bad conditions the altitude is low, and the importance of communication along the valley high, so the roads are kept open.
